Bloglette: Social Media in Guyana

As usual when I travel I ask people which social media sites they use. My very unscientific sample of young people in Guyana found that most use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp. My sample had not heard of Pinterest or Snapchat…..yet. The population uses mobile for a variety of social and business purposes and wireless is widely available.

The most popular ice cream store in Georgetown is Brusters. The product is excellent and there are a variety of flavors. The brand encourages people to follow them on Facebook. However, most businesses in Georgetown are small local businesses that do not attempt to engage people using social media.

Another interesting observation: Georgetown is one capital without a McDonalds, Starbucks or Gap. How refreshing to find a place with it’s own character?
